Overview
Cristina Busu sits with Bethany, a young woman of 21 who was finally diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome only three years prior. Bethany shares her story in this ten part series that describes what it’s like growing up with an undiagnosed learning difference. In this segment, Uncovering Asperger’s 5: Advice to Teachers (and Parents), Bethany gives advice to teachers and parents on how to interact with individuals with learning differences like hers. Some examples are to be patient, to avoid yelling, to give her something to do with her hands, to follow through with promises, and to use schedules.
Presenter
Bethany wasn't diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome until she was 18 years old, at the end of high school. At 21, she's currently making great advances with the help of continuing therapy and hard work. She has a fascinating perspective on what it's like growing up with multiple learning differences, knowing that you're different, but not knowing why. Her experiences provide useful insights for others with learning differences, as well as caregivers, teachers, and friends.
