If Only Life Was a Musical

If Only Life Was a Musical……
We challenge you to find one person that doesn’t like music. Seriously…..it’s pretty much impossible. Everyone likes at least one genre of music, if not several. As adults, music can serve many different purposes. It can be for pure enjoyment. Music can help with our emotional states….it can calm us down and decrease our stress. Music can pep us up and get our energy booming. Music can help us focus on important tasks. Music can be a social outlet for us. Music can also help us learn. This is the same for children!

Not Just Play

Not Just Play
Don’t let it deceive you. Play isn’t just fun and good times for kiddos. It’s essential for your child’s overall development. ALL children learn through experiencing, seeing, listening and doing…....which is the essence of play. This is true for all children…..typical children and children with disabilities.

Question of the Day: Who's In Control of Your Household?

Question of the Day: Who’s In Control of Your Household?
We all like to be in control. Some people more than others…….but being in control of our lives and day to day happenings guarantees that things will run smoothly. We know what will happen next. We know things will get done the way we like it. Control decreases our anxiety and it is a safety zone. This is the same for children with autism spectrum disorders.

Question of the Day: The Holidays are Approaching

submitted by kidspeak

Question of the Day: The holidays are approaching. How can I prepare my child?
The holidays have a tendency to sneak up on us. September went by like nobody’s business....soon it will be Halloween…..then Thanksgiving will hit us like a ton of bricks……then before you know it, it’s Hanukah, Christmas and then New Year’s. Whew! For me, the holidays are typically a whirlwind of preparation and stress, but of course filled with wonderful traditions and fun time with family. If the holidays can be stressful for us, think how stressful they can be for our children.

Our Jaw-Dropping Moment of the Week: The Real World
I am a ridiculously lucky person. This semester I have had the exciting opportunity that not many grown adults get to have………..I GOT TO ENROLL IN PRESCHOOL!!!
Well, kinda. I get to tag along and do therapy with one of my little friends while he goes to preschool with his new peers. I am 4 years old all over again and I am L-O-V-I-N-G it!
I experienced all the 4-year-old-starting-a-new-school adventures:
I picked out a brand new lunchbox.

Home Is Where The Progress Is

submitted by kidspeak

Therapists are dedicated, trained professionals that are here to help your child learn, grow and progress. Therapists are NOT miracle workers. Therapists can NOT fix or cure your child in the 1 to 3 hours a week that they see your child. But what therapists can do, is give you and your child the tools and the pathway to take so that YOU can make the progress at home.

Question of the Day: “My child doesn’t look at us when he talks, what can we do to help him?”

Question of the Day: Why should I try more visuals with my child if PECS didn't work?

submitted by kidspeak

Question of the Day: “My child already tried “PECS” and it didn’t work, why would we try more visuals?”
This is another great question that we get a lot from many, many parents.
