DSM-V Changes Regarding Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders in the News

Talk of changes to the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-V criterion for diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorders has a lot of people fired up recently. In this clip from CNN, Nancy Grace feels making the APA's proposed changes, "...will limit special education and services to children in need." Nancy goes on to question the role of future government funding in these proposed changes and how American children will be affected. She boldly states, "This is wrong!" We know that many of you - the families and professionals who live and/or work with children and young adults currently classified as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder - must have an opinion...how do YOU feel about the proposed changes?

Helping Families with Autism during Funerals

submitted by lawilcox

One of my dear friends lost her mother to a long, painful battle with cancer this week. My friend has a nephew with Autism. When I asked if there was anything I could do to help the family, my friend asked for assistance helping to find someone to keep an eye on her nephew during the service. He and his family will be traveling from out of town. My sweet and thoughtful friend wants her brother and sister-in-law to be able to focus on the service even if their son feels the need to get up and explore, pace or simply move around.

Getting Guidance (Part 2)

submitted by dramberbrooks

A few weeks ago I did part 1 of this blog to bring awareness to parents with special needs children and the importance of getting guidance. So, lets dive in and answer these questions so you can get started tomorrow.
Does the type of testing matter?
Each doctor has a toolbox of testing they do and all are not equal, neither is the interpretation of the results. I will touch on this more next month but in the mean time find someone that treats and sees children with special needs and make sure they have the knowledge in functional medicine (treating the core issues) to treat your child.

Getting Guidance (Part 1)

submitted by dramberbrooks

It is Autism Awareness month and it makes me think most about those parents and families that are without guidance on their journey. In a blink of an eye your life changes and your child is diagnosed, this overwhelms every family and most all have little guidance. The maze of the internet becomes the constant as you search online for hope. Some parents get the care they need and others spend 10 years following dead ends. It is my mission to see parents get ALL their options for treatment. I cannot count the number of parents that have cried in frustration and in joy.

Medicare needs PR help

submitted by KentPotter

I just read the article "Medicare Would Rather Buy $8000 Computer than $150 iPhone App" found over at GIZMODO.com and just about tossed my lunch across the room. The thoughts that are running through my mind are moving to fast to type. This type of archaic thinking, behavior, decision making, and communication is absurd.

submitted by KentPotter

Autism Awareness Month: What can I do?
AutismSpot is a world leader in the dissemination of information regarding every possible therapy, early intervention, and a catalyst for helping the Autism Community understand the options available to teenagers and adults on the spectrum. Throughout the month, I will use this blog to share with you tips and suggestions covering everything from early signs through specific actions you can take to assist families living with Autism.
So what can you do?

Incredible Fridays

Incredible Fridays is a ministry of First Baptist Church in McKinney, TX. This outreach to the special needs community opens the door for many families to have child care that otherwise are unable. Having the opportunity to spend a few hours alone, one a date, eating at a restaurant, or seeing a movie is often rare for special needs families. Incredible Fridays makes it possible. See how they do it.

How do we fall in love?

submitted by KentPotter

It's 8:00PM on November 3, 2008 and Sam (7 yrs old) was getting into bed when he asked for me to tell him a story about New York City. I proceeded to tell him about the Broadway Musical "Legally Blond" that we saw a few weeks ago. As I described the set, the theatre, the weather during our walk from Times Square, and finally the plot of the musical he asked, "How do we fall in love?"
