Favorite Posts of 2011 – One More Step, by Kent Potter

submitted by lawilcox

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2011 this week, we at AutismSpot wanted to re-share a few of our favorite blog posts from the year as a means of recollection. As I carefully sifted through AutismSpot’s Founder – Kent Potter’s – posts, I was touched again by so many of his pieces. Kent has a beautiful way with words and often tackles subjects regarding autism and Asperger’s Syndrome which beg to be addressed, but he does it with candid grace. Kent and Angie Potter (and their amazing family) inspire me in many ways but I can never thank them enough for sharing their insights (and those of others) with everyone at AutismSpot over the years. I am so thankful to call Kent both colleague and friend. It is my pleasure to repost Kent Potter’s post entitled “One More Step” which originally ran back in September. Thanks for the powerful reminder and lovely illustration that small wins count BIG, Kent! I couldn’t agree more.

Home Emergencies

Life is full of twists and turns. As kids we learn to “roll with the punches” and as adults we must handle the unexpected in life as best as we can. Raising children, especially those with ASD, we adults have the responsibility of modeling what it looks like to be flexible and handle the “curveballs” the game of life throws us - with grace and dignity. But, it isn’t always easy, is it?
Saturday evening Greg, Ethan and I arrived home from a two-week vacation out West to visit family, dig our feet in the sands of the Pacific Ocean and experience all that Disneyland and LEGOLAND have to offer. Our trip was phenomenal! Staying with family not only made our trip fiscally possible, but it was such a joy to see cousins, aunts and uncles we rarely get to see. But I’ll write more about the amazing trip in future blog posts…for now I want to share about coming home to find our Master Bedroom ½ flooded thanks to a cracked plastic connection for the toilet supply line.

Truth

Dismount from your high horse, soapbox, and personal-political platform for a few minutes and accept reality. Every minute, every month, every year that ticks by is either an opportunity to grow or a missed opportunity. For every one of the schools throughout the United States that get it right for the special needs community, there are many times more who get it wrong. We talk about advocacy and promoting awareness while school districts across the United States continue to get it wrong every day.
