DSM-V Changes Regarding Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders in the News

Talk of changes to the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-V criterion for diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorders has a lot of people fired up recently. In this clip from CNN, Nancy Grace feels making the APA's proposed changes, "...will limit special education and services to children in need." Nancy goes on to question the role of future government funding in these proposed changes and how American children will be affected. She boldly states, "This is wrong!" We know that many of you - the families and professionals who live and/or work with children and young adults currently classified as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder - must have an opinion...how do YOU feel about the proposed changes?

Forks Over Knives – Documentary About the Western Diet & Illness

submitted by lawilcox

What if you discovered you were dying of cancer? I expect you’d seek the best doctors you could find to help you wage a war for your life. You’d likely end up on a variety of medications and treatments, costing you thousands and thousands of dollars…and you’d still probably fear for your health and livelihood. Now, what if I told you that you could reverse the progression of that cancer (or heart disease, diabetes, auto immune disorder, bone disease or stroke) by radically overhauling your diet? Would you be surprised? Would you make those necessary changes all while wondering why your doctor never shared this information and option with you?
The filmmakers of the thought-provoking and potentially life-changing documentary “Forks Over Knives,” which opens in theaters tomorrow, examine this concept – that basic changes to the Western Diet prove to be a much more effective “treatment” for many modern diseases and ailments than standard surgeries/treatments/prescription medications.

12-Month Checklist to Detect Autism Spectrum Disorders Shows Promise

Using a new 24-item checklist, researchers at the University of California in San Diego were able to detect Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental issues/concerns at 12-month well-baby checkups (with Pediatricians) for a large percentage of study participants. The new study was published in The Journal of Pediatrics on April 29, 2011.

PBS Autism Now Series with Robert MacNeil

submitted by lawilcox

In case you’re not aware, in honor of Autism Awareness Month, PBS has been running a series called “Autism Now” during the highly-regarded NewsHour program. Robert MacNeil, who co-founded the series with Jim Lehrer, has a 6-year-old grandson in Massachusetts who lives with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). For this reason, “Autism Now” kicked off with a very personal episode about MacNeil’s daughter, Alison, and her family, (including MacNeil’s son-in-law, his neurotypical 10-year-old granddaughter and grandson, Nick, who lives with ASD).
When I first heard about this series, I was cautiously optimistic; you see, I often feel sorely disappointed in the way our news programs and talk shows cover this very complicated disorder for several reasons:

Autism in the genes

“Neural signatures” may point to a genetic vulnerability to developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The findings, reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could eventually lead to earlier and more accurate diagnosis.

“This study may contribute to a better understanding of the brain basis of ASD, and the genetic and molecular origin of the disorder,” says first author Martha Kaiser, a postdoctoral associate at Yale University.

Wake Up America: 1 in every 91 children

submitted by KentPotter

The rate of Autism in the United States is now reported to be 1 in every 91 children. The "official" prevalence rate is up 50% from 1 in every 150 children just a few short years ago. Am I speechless? Am I surprised? Am I at a loss for words? Am I dumbfounded beyond belief? Are you nuts? Of course I am not surprised, nor bewildered, and I am definitely not speechless. You don't have to be part of the Autism Community for long before you realize that the "official" numbers have been inaccurate for a long time.

Medicare needs PR help

I just read the article "Medicare Would Rather Buy $8000 Computer than $150 iPhone App" found over at GIZMODO.com and just about tossed my lunch across the room. The thoughts that are running through my mind are moving to fast to type. This type of archaic thinking, behavior, decision making, and communication is absurd.

What's in your wallet?

submitted by KentPotter

For the child who is recently diagnosed on the autism spectrum and their family, the costs associated with evaluations, doctor appointments, therapists, developmental pediatricians, diagnosticians, and counselors can be astronomical. When your child is diagnosed on the spectrum, the reality sets in that every dollar that comes in can be used for some type of intervention or therapy that could make a significant difference in their life. The value of the dollar takes on an entirely new meaning. The question becomes....What's in your wallet?
