UIC Joins International Research Effort

University of Illinois at Chicago researchers are involved in an effort to seek, obtain, and study the DNA samples of 2,000 autism patients over the next 3 years. The study will create a database of information of families that are affected with only one autistic child. This database will allow researchers to compare genetic factors that may contribute to autism.

ABC News - School Give Autistic Students Way to Communicate

The Community School in Decatur Georgia understands what it takes to create a warm, inviting, and safe environment for kids with autism. The Community School has 8 male students and 12 faculty members and is designed for students between the ages of 12-18. The faculty work with the students, progressing them to the point of graduation in the district's GED program.

Combined Senses Give Us a Better View of the World

University of Montreal researchers J.E. Lugo, R. Doti, and Jocely Flaubert, and Walter Wittich of McGill University have been conducting research into the five senses. What they set out to understand is if our five senses had the ability to work with one another, and if an overlap in those senses occurred.

Scientists and Clinicians to Meet in Philadelphia

The 58th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics in Philadelphia Pennsylvania began on November 11th and will run through November 15th. The annual conference brings together some of the world's top scientists in the field of human genetics. A number of the presentations at the conference will provide information about genome wide association studies and their role in causes of genetic conditions.

In Search of Care....

Some San Antonio parents have run into roadblocks with doctors, reporting that their children have been denied medical care or surgeries because of their autism diagnosis. While it is in a doctor's right to refuse treatment to anyone except in the case of an emergency, medical experts and parents want to see medical professionals learn how to work with our special needs children.

Story Time

Over the past two months of the school year, Mason has been spending more and more time in his mainstreamed Kindergarten class. We see this as a good thing and we hope in the future that full days mainstreamed will be a reality.
As I’ve mentioned before Rashele and I regularly take turns having lunch at school with Mason. This enables him to sit with typical peers and build some social network skills, pick up on cues, and hopefully strike up some small friendships.

The Cost of Autism

An all too familiar story: families going broke to pay for the cost of therapies and services to help overcome the diagnosis of autism. Even then there is no guarantee. Many families have opted to go deep into debt, often taking out additional mortgages on their homes to fund the many services needed for their children.
