Canadian Government Refusing To Listen

The Supreme Court of Canada declined an invitation Thursday to get involved in a plea from parents of children with autism who are seeking damages in a class-action lawsuit against the Ontario government and several school boards for failing to offer intensive therapy in public schools.

With the Canadian federal election quickly approaching this fall, many anticipate that autism will become a topic discussed on the front burner. Many parents throughout Canada are outraged at the lack of services and are calling on legislators to step up and lend assistance.

Canadian Mothers Penning Books on Autism

Two Canadian mothers, neither with children on the spectrum, have come together to write two book called "Welcome to My Autistic World" and "Autism Epidemic: Shaking the System". After having been a volunteer at her child's elementary school, Litsa Kamateros noted how ASD children were treated differently by their peers, and even by some parents. This sparked an idea on raising awareness and creating the children's picture book "Welcome to my Autistic World".

Canada's Cash Crunch

Peter Kormos, vocal critic of Canada's programs for autistic children and familes is speaking out. The chances of clearing a long and crowded waiting list in Canada is roughly 50%. There are currently 1,400 children in the Ontario province receiving services. Sadly there are over 1,100 languishing on waiting lists that aren't moving due to lack of funding.

Surgeon Moves Family For Better Services

Dr. Leif Sigurdson, a plastic surgeon specializing in reconstructive surgery is leaving Nova Scotia and moving his family West to Winnipeg in order to receive better services. A lack of resources and and limitations of hours allowed in the program Nova Scotia currently provides led to his decision.

Landmark Case Goes Before Canada's Highest Court

Canadian courts received case on Monday of parents fighting the education system and the lack of services best suited for their affected children's needs. Five families are attempting bring suit against the Government of Ontario and seven school boards for what it deems as negligence and damages. The suit accuses them of failing to provide, and properly fund the expensive therapies in schools.
