Florida CARD Program Barely Scrapes By

The University of Central Florida's CARD Center assists thousands of families affected by autism. In 1998 the center assisted 230 families, and assisted the families with finding speech and behavioral therapists. Now there are roughly 4,700 families that rely on the center for assistance. Unfortunately the Florida Legislature cut the budget this by 10%.

Popular Antidepressant Found Ineffective in Treating Autism

Recently making national news, Celexa has been proven to be ineffective at treating symptoms of autism such as repetitive behaviors such as spinning, head banging, and twirling. In many instances those taking Celexa were twice as likely to develop repetitive behaviors than those on a placebo. Many also suffered side effects such as nightmares.

Tantrum Boot Camp

Kids tantrum, fuss, squeal, yell, and scream. As a parent, you quickly learn what your tolerance level is.....then you rocket past it by 1,000%. You are able to handle much more than you would expect. Toss some Autism adventures into the mix and you have a real party at times. You talk to yourself, you don't sleep, your child doesn't sleep, you might be married but have no idea when the last time you had a real conversation with your spouse was, and then you have a job. Wait. Yes, that's right, you talk to yourself first.

(I’ll admit I wrote this blog 3 weeks ago, but because of a busy work schedule didn’t have time to finish it until recently)
We thought it impossible.
But it had to be attempted.
Since Mason has had a pretty solid year in school, both in his mainstreamed class and his functional academics class we wanted to reward him. At the same time, we wanted to reward the kids whom, despite Mason’s regular reluctance to play with, have protected him, helped him, and befriended him since day 1.

Research suggests children can recover from autism

10-20%. That's the number that psychology professor Deborah Fein of the University of Connecticut believes can recover from autism. In research she presented at an autism conference in Chicago last week, she outlined the cases of 20 children on the spectrum that no longer met the autism criteria. The study is also going as far as comparing brain imaging scans in formerly autistic children to analyze if their normal behavior is a result of normal brain activity.

It never feels good to be the one left out of a group. Being the outsider looking in is not the position most of us want to be in. Are they talking about me? Are they laughing at me? Are they having fun at my expense and I don't even know it? Where are my friends? Who will want to be with me?


Autism screening tops Obama's medical to-do list

Many have been relieved to see that Autism is getting some attention in the new Presidential Administration this year. What many hope to see implemented soon universal screenings for infants and rescreening children at 2 years of age.
