State's Autism Reform Efforts Gaining Traction

Connecticut may soon be pushing through legislation that would require insurance companies to cover such therapies as ABA for children with autism. This, because of the hard work of many parents, community leaders, and state representatives has raised a tremendous amount of awareness to the financial plight of families affected by autism.

ABC News - Film Portrays Parents' Autism Dilemna

A film centered around a boy named Graham details the struggle around the diagnosis of autism. Some children have all the signs of autism and the diagnosis fits them perfectly. Other children meet some of the criteria but not all. This makes them "autistic-like". This has presented a challenge to parents and doctors alike.

CNN - ABA Therapy

ABA therapy has long been a main staple of the therapeutic world of many on the spectrum. Studies show that 60% of children may, as a positive end result of ABA therapy, lose their diagnosis by age 8. However, ABA does have it's critics. What may work well for one child may not work well for another. All therapies must be tailored to the individual.

ABA Receives Stay of Execution in South Carolina

Having been on the chopping block, state ABA services to children 3 and younger were to end on January 31st. The services shown to help many children on the spectrum have been extended while the state's Department of Health and Education Control, with help from the federal government, review the decision.

Insurance

Me: Dear Mr. Insurance Company, please reimburse me for this ABA Therapy for my daughter with PDD-NOS.
Friendly Insurance Guy (FIG): Whaaah?
Me: You know, Pervasive Developmental Disorder? Applied Behavior Analysis?
FIG: We don’t pay for that.
Me: Oh. Ok. Then please reimburse me for this Music Therapy.
FIG: Ha ha ha!
Me: Ok ok. Then please reimburse me for this Speech Therapy. Your book says you pay for that.
FIG: Uh, we need to be sure that you don’t have other insurance first.
