The Autistic Self Advocacy Network is a non profit group that is setting their sights on breaking down the walls and advancing the autism culture, and advocating for neurodiverse individuals. Their message is "Stop the search for a cure and begin celebrating autistic people for their differences". This has caused some controversy between the group and some parents of children with autism.

Come as you are

It bothers me when people say autism can be cured; managed would be a better word. People are scared of what is different, and autistic people are definitely different. I think my autistic son has much to teach society, but they have to want to learn. Society needs a dose of acceptance and a dash of tolerance to comprehend the wisdom autistic people have to offer. Who couldn't benefit from meeting a person who doesn't normally lie or manipulate? Or perhaps someone does need to say it like it is, even if not so tactful, for shock value. Why not try to see the world from a different paradigm? Enlightenment to all. ~a

Thanks!!

Thanks for that annaNaspie!

I only read the story on abcnews.com, didn't know there was a video that had accompanied it (I was reading it with one eye while working.)

In the beginning I wanted it cured. My views have changed a great deal over the past couple of years. Mason's autism brings him so many good things and I hope that we can enhance those, and for those challenging things that it brings, simply help him cope with them in a positive way.
