More and more findings are showing that autism is not just a neurological disorder but one that affects more areas of the body than first suspected. Findings in the gut and the immune system have also been noted. Teams of neuroscientists, toxicologists and other professionals are combing over findings in many areas including food allergies, abnormal placenta growth and inflamed brain tissue to come with viable medications that may assist in aiding autism.

Great article
First read this article two years ago, and it's one of the best descriptions of the neurology of autism, why a lot of our kids have severe gut issues, and why biomedical treatments are effective for a lot of kids. This should be required reading for any parents dealing with these issues.
Also thought I'd mention that Discover Magazine has recently published a lot of ignorant garbage about autism that is in direct conflict with the ideas stated in this article (first published in 2007). There's a lot of politics and manipulation out there these days, you gotta watch out! Such as, the article about the Mayo clinic study about the "ineffectiveness" of special diets and the UK study saying that kids with autism don't have bowel problems, both of which were in the news section here on AutismSpot and both of which were politically motivated garbage. I sometimes think these get posted here just for the sense of irony, because most of us who visit this site know better.
Many thanks for posting this very informative article!!!!
