Well, it happened. We went to the neurologist and my Kai no longer meets the criteria for pervasive development disorder. So what now? The neurologist said that if he came in to get tested the way he is today, they would just say that he has a minor speech delay. He still doesn't answer why questions and complex what questions, but he said that is normal for some 3yr olds...especially children who just acquired language. His social skills are normal for a 3 yr old. His playskills actually are fine now, he does line up things occasionally, but mainly a row of his animals. Blocks are now homes with bridges and trees. He has stuffed animals now that he kisses and hugs..and his stuffed animals have stuffed animal friends. He's even been asking about his friend from school.
I don't know how to react. Yes, I'm very excited, but he acquired everything in such a short time. Of course, he's been in therapy since he was 18mos old. It just feels like he just gained everything in 6 mos...after a year and a half of floundering, he just woke up one day...poof...he got it. He says that now too "i got it". Maybe he has. He just finished his ABLLS last friday, I saw the chart, but I haven't spoken with the BCBA yet. He's only three and he's mastered everything, except for the stuff that obviously in his age group.
My thoughts on recovery. I don't believe in a cure...i do believe recovery is more associated with being able to blend. I'm assuming, that he'll always need help with change, transition, and perhaps will enjoy spending time alone. I don't know I can only speculate, but his father is this way. We'll have to wait and see when he's older.
For now, I had been planning on taking him out of ABA, it's not helping anymore and he's not learning anything anymore. He will go to his autism school. He still needs help with writing and speech. So, that will help him immensely. I still plan on putting his in floortime, his therapist wanted to put him in a group with 2 other little boys, and teach them how to join in play and i guess "get the party started". I think that would aid him in making friends.
Anyway that's all for now. We'll see how everything pans out in the next year. Also, what happens when he goes back to school. I feel like I'm ill-prepared for what's to come.
