Wii Love You, Dad!

I don't think I have ever seen my husband as excited as when he saw his Father's Day gift from the boys.

Several months ago Kent mentioned that it would be so much fun to have a Wii. "They are interactive, smart, and you can even get a work out from playing it!" He was really trying to make his case for this expensive video game. I'm not a huge fan of video games, but, they were fun and it could be something that we could do together as a family and use as a "social outreach" in having play dates for Sam. I thought it would be really fun to buy Kent one for Father's Day, and of course with craziness of day to day life, put it off until the day before his "big" holiday.

Kent was working the AutismSpot booth for the Autism Speaks walk and I was taking care of the boys and working on stuff at home. Around 10:00 am I realized that I forgot to try to locate a Wii for Kent. I thought "No problem" and we went to Super Target. In the electronics section, the 16 year old helping me sort of rolled his eyes and said, "No ma'am we are sold out, as usual." First of all, I felt old that he called me "ma'am" and I felt dumb for temporarily forgetting that Wii's are hard to get. So I got on my cell phone and started calling the Game Stops, Targets, and Wal-Marts in our city and two surrounding cities with no luck.... about 11 phone calls later I remembered Christina, our wonderful therapist who lives in Sherman, Texas. "If you ever want a Wii, just come up to Sherman, there are always a lot there". Sherman is about an hour north of our town. Wal-Mart in Sherman was sold out, but the Super Target there had 15. We hopped in the car for a "road trip" with one hungry 7 year old and a 3 1/2 year old who desperately needed a nap.

When we got to Super Target in Sherman, they were sold out!

"I spoke with Caleb, and he said he'd put one back for me since we were driving so far."
"Caleb is on lunch break, and we don't put any Wii's back for anyone."
"But there were 15 of them just 2 hours ago!"
"I'm so sorry ma'am....they are gone."
"Please, can you check one more time?" I didn't want to get Caleb in trouble, but I also really wanted to get this for Kent if at all possible... plus I wanted that trip in the car to count for something!

Sure enough, the manager found our Wii somewhere in the stock room after about 15 minutes of looking around, and checked me out at a line that didn't have a light on, and encouraged me to cover up the boxes so no one would see it.... wow, this Wii craze is pretty serious! The manager also assured me that Caleb would not be in trouble. I felt better after hearing that.

When Daddy came home from a long and wonderful day at the Autism Speaks walk, Luke rushed to him saying "Daddy, Daddy, we got a really cool video game for you for Father's Day- Open it, Open it!" I wish I had a picture of Kent's face when Luke took him the white box.... throughout the night he just kept saying "I can't believe you bought this. How did you pay for it?! This is so fun" and stayed up way past midnight breaking in the new toy.

Kent rarely takes time for himself and works so much that to see him so excited was priceless. I need to remember to take time to take care of this amazing man who always takes such wonderful care of us. Thanks to the Capital One credit card, a rule-breaking Caleb at Super Target in Sherman, and an exciting night of Wii gaming with his two favorite little boys, we had one very happy Daddy.

Wii love you, Dad!
