Product Review: I have sampled a lot of sensory products over the last couple of years, and this is one that I truly enjoyed. Moon Sand (sold by Achievement Products) has a super cool consistency to it. It is not as grainy as sand, and not “doughly” as clay, but rather is somewhere in between. What I love is that, unlike play dough, Moon Sand can be molded into a detailed shape and will stick together – without the need for water! However, it should be noted that your design may have a tendency to crumble rather easily, making it frustrating at times to build anything too elaborate. Though, with that said, the kids that played with it under my supervision (see pictures and comments below) were able to sculpt a ball (one child called his “a snowball”), a snowman, and my son even constructed a small castle! The Occupational therapist also loved this product, saying that “It provides children with a unique, fun sensory experience, while helping to develop and strengthen their fine motor skills.” If Occupational therapists like this product, you know that you can’t go wrong! Oh, it should also be mentioned that Moon Sand never dries out, so you can use it over and over again!
Moon Sand has a tendency to be a little messy, but can be contained if you put it in a container, sensory table, or on a large tray. Achievement Products sells a “No Mess Tray” for $24.99, which is great for paint, clay, goo, sand, rice and snow products. I would strongly recommend using a container, sensory table, or large tray for this product; otherwise it may get a little messy. However, kids tend to love messy play, so, for them, this might be a good thing! (I’m thinking more about the parents in this instance.)
Okay, now for the true test! To get a better idea of just how cool this product is, I had a few kindergarten students try out the Moon Sand for themselves! If you have a little one at home, you know that five-year-olds can be brutally honest in their opinions, so I was anxious to hear what they had to say about this product. Below are some of the comments I heard while the students were experimenting with the Moon Sand:
“Wow, it’s sticky!”
“I like it; it’s really soft!”
“I have sand like this at home but this is better, because it sticks together.”
“Look, I’m making a snowman!”
“I’m going to make a castle!”
“This stuff is so cool!”
“I’m going to get my mom to buy this!
“I want to play with this every single day!”
Clearly, Moon Sand passed the test! There’s nothing like a little sensory fun to put a smile on a child’s face!
If you are looking for a cool sensory product that is a little different from some of the others that are on the market, I would definitely recommend Moon Sand. It just may be the perfect product for your sensory-seeker!
