It's a GIRL!

The Potter family recently went through some renovations. An expansion has been underway for the past nine months and was completed with the birth of Olivia on May 18th.

Am I glowing? Can you see the rays of sunshine coming from your computer screen? Put on some sunscreen because we are all beaming with excitement. Olivia is perfection wrapped in a bundle of pink. Her brothers shower her with kisses, they fight over who will hold her, she is loved beyond all imagination. It's probably totally absurd how much she is loved and I like it that way.

Did I mention I have a baby girl. Her name is Olivia. Sorry, just wanted to make sure it was clear. She is adorable, precious, cuddly, snuggly, and absolute perfection. Oh, you want my man card because I am sappy and bleed pink now? Well, you will have to pry it out of my hands. Actually, if you come close you will see my arms wrapped around my baby girl and Sam and Luke will take you out if you are not nice to her.

Fortress Potter has been established and big brother #1 and #2 are all about their new little sister. They tell everyone, they remind people to not touch her hands, head, or face. They ensure everyone washes their hands if they are going to hold her. They drive the stroller, sing to her, and keep asking when she will talk. Their new playmate loves them. Olivia is six weeks old and makes little smiles at them. Her eyes track us all around the room as we go about our business. She is very fond of little curly and big red. I should probably admit that she is being held 98% of the time. Forget what the books tell you, a baby can not be held too much. The time will come soon when she wants us to let her down to move around, crawl, and roam. For now, we hold, smell her baby scent, and speak sweetly to her.

We are soaking up every newborn moment because they just simply go by too fast.

I have two incredible boys, a beautiful baby girl and an absolutely incredible wife. Life is good, life is very good!

So sweet! I think it's encouraging to share with our community here how different Sam's response has been to his new little sister than when his little brother was born.... Sam has come so far and is so much more connected and engaged than we could have imagined he would be, considering where he was 6 years ago. When I was pregnant with Luke and Sam was 3 1/2, he had no idea what was going on nor did he care. When Luke was born and Sam was close to 4 years old, he checked out his little brother, kept one wary eye on him occasionally, but other than that, did not show any interest, concern, or feelings for him at all... it was almost as though baby brother Luke wasn't even here. It was very sad. Once Luke started walking after turning a year old, Sam showed a little bit of interest (other than being annoyed and screaming when Luke would cry) and once Luke was closer to 1 1/2 years old, our ABA therapist Christina started including Luke in some of Sam's sessions.... that opened the door for the beginnings of a relationship between the boys. Now, at ages 9 and 5 1/2, they "fight like brothers" and love like brothers- they have a pretty typical sibling relationship- which as we know in the autism community, isn't "typical", it's fabulous! :) So this time around, with Sam being a big brother for the 2nd time and being a completely different child (thanks to tons of private therapy, medication, prayer, & maturity) it's incredible to see how involved & invested he is in his new little sister, and how Olivia is "his" baby, and how much he truly loves her.

Congratulations to the New-and-Improved Potter Fam!

Excellent post Kent, (and comment from Angie!) I love hearing about how the boys are adjusting to Olivia's arrival...and, since I've personally met the little-ray-ofsunshine otherwise known as Olivia, I can further validate that she is the icing on the cake of the already wonderfully sweet and decadent Potter Family! Congratulations to you all!
