I am an adult who lives at home with her parents because I have a Learning Disability. (Asperger Syndrome).
I learned to walk at fourteen months old, which is considered late development. At four years old, I was banging my head on the floor and spinning around whatever room I was, in the house. when I was six years old, I didn't hit back another six year old girl who hit me first. the result was my dad spanking me so hard I saw stars, and grounding me all day long in my room. I had trouble learning to ride a bike and therefore didn't learn. When I was seven, my mom asked the doctor what was wrong with me and he said, "Don't worry, she'll catch up." It didn't happen. I also realized that most kids and adults noticed I talked funny, a monotone without a pause. It developed into a Speech Impediment. the cop next door told me he had to watch me better because I talked funny. When we moved to Texas (from Youngstown, Ohio) my new school, Pine Tree, decided I needed to be in remedial Math and Remedial Speech class. (at my other school, it was noticed I had a problem with math, but not speech. How did a Catholic School, St. Matthias, miss that?). At my new school kids asked the same question, "Are You Retarded?" just like at my old school. At ten years old, I played well with other kids because I was always "It", otherwise they wouldn't play nice and complained to the adults that I didn't "Play Fair." At age eleven, it was so embarrassing that adults corrected my speech and still didn't understand what I was saying; twelve years old, and I was considered a pervert by my peers because I started talking about Sex and Periods. They also thought I was weird because I still couldn't ride a bike, just roller skate.
