So, how does one know if their daughter has autism?? I always worry about my daughter. She seems to be developing typically. Yet, something bothers me about her...and i can't put my finger on it. I really think, sometimes, I'm just over-precautious. However, the tell-tale signs are there. EXAMPLE:
-she walks on her tiptoes...and I mean walks on her tiptoes...about 90 % of the time. She just started doing this at about 19mos old.
-she started wringing her hands when new people are around. don't get me wrong, she warms up to them after awhile...but..the wringing is what gets me.
-so, i took her to the library for storytime. she didn't do tantrum or anything, she just stared. that's it. the whole time..except when i tried to touch her..and she got angry (she really isn't too affectionate.
-she has horrible eczema...it's bad...my son only gets it every now and again..but still
-i don't know that she's playing with her toys correctly. yes, she does imagination play...she has somewhat taught my son...but...i don't know...there's just something about it
-I haven't really been able to teach her anything, like i did with my son. she won't stay still...ever!
anyway, i do feel like i'm overreacting, regardless, i am still getting her checked. you just never know...right?
I think it was just so easy to tell with my son...by 9 1/2 mos...i knew, it was just apparent. i wish i could just put my finger on it...you know...it could be that i've never been around typical kids. I mean, I even work with 2yr old autistic toddlers..maybe that's the problem...autistic has become my normal..ha!

autism angst
Autistic is your normal.... :) But it is hard to be emotionally removed and observe your own child. It will put your mind at ease to consult a doctor, but you already know there are quirks. You listed certain traits because you know they are characteristic of spectrum disorders. Girls are less afflicted, and according to some research, are able to blend into society more easily due to the female role in society. Good luck to you, and I think she is lucky to have you as her mom. ~a

Yes it isn't as common but mine is a girl. I don't recall her ever walking on her tiptoes.
The VP at my daughter's school is watching her son and so is the behavioral specialist. Maybe they are just too attuned and too immersed or maybe they are on to something.
My daughter's most outstanding difference as a toddler was that she threw the most spectacular temper tantrums and she would crawl under tables and not come out. She also had very odd pronuciations and talked 200 miles an hour.
They are all so different. You probably need to go ahead and get her tested as we all know early intervention is the best chance they can get.
