During the big Autism One conference last week in Chicago, an announcement was made regarding the launch of a new American political push – The Canary Party.
The tagline: “Sick and tired of…being sick and tired. We have had enough. It is time to end the corruption that is destroying the health of Americans.”
I was in the room during the announcement and can tell you that there was a visceral buzz of excitement. And throughout the remainder of the conference, the momentum continued to build as attendees purchased yellow “Canary” t-shirts, bags, bumper stickers and other various items.
What is The Canary Party?
You can read more at the website, but as an overview, The Canary Party is “a group of citizens disturbed by the increasingly failing health of those in our society.” Their position is that it is “time to stop asking the medical establishment to pay attention to the epidemic of illness, and demand that they do, or replace them” with professionals who will. Mark Blaxill, the party Chairman and co-author of The Age of Autism, announced at Autism One that The Canary Party is “explicitly political” and while it might be a true “political party” in some states, in others it may serve as a metaphor. He added that the Canary Party is “a movement to focus on political action, harness pent-up energy, team up with other groups and demand action.”
The party is founded upon 8 Principles: Awareness, Precaution, Safety, Choice, Freedom, Justice, Scientific Integrity and Compassion, as they relate to the medical and industrial complex in America.
As it was presented at Autism One, following more than a decade of parents working vigorously to have these important issues addressed by those in power in America, and following the mainstream media’s lackluster response to the “Unanswered Questions” paper from the Elizabeth Birt Center for Law and Advocacy (EBCALA) in the Pace Environmental Law Review this spring (referring to “83 Canaries” with Autism Spectrum Disorders who have received compensation for vaccine injuries from the American Vaccine Injury Compensation Program), a core group of motivated people got together to brainstorm. Jointly, they decided it was “time to stop begging – time to start making demands!” Blaxill added, “It doesn’t matter what your other [political] affiliations are; leave those at the door and focus on a shared agenda and common cause.”
What now?
Blaxill noted that the party is in the early stages and just getting started but encouraged interested individuals to get involved by visiting the website, learning more and joining the movement. He also announced the first Canary Party Convention on July 22, 2011, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The party organizers are currently looking for delegates to attend from each state. During the convention, a formal party platform will be forged.

Trends in Wedding Invitations
I think it is safe to say that traditional paper invitations are no longer expected. Many couples opt to get creative with their invitations instead of the standard solid color with text. It's kind of a cool thing to personalize invitations with your personality as a couple, instead of feeling forced to use an invitation that is traditional and standard, but often times really "blah."
Here are some trends in wedding invitations (save the date cards too):
Moving Away from Traditional
Some couples are moving so far away from traditional invitations that they are opting for e-vites instead. I wouldn't say that online invitations are fully embraced today (I myself wouldn't use them), but it shows you that times have changed regarding attitudes of what is proper and what is not. Basically, I think we can safely assume that most people in modern society appreciate the engaged couple's preferences and uniqueness and are happy to embrace whatever the couple feels so inclined to do-within reasonable limits.
For save the date cards, a lot of flexibility is allowed here. Some couples send out magnets, CDs, postcards, bookmarks, you name it. These can really be customized to what you want and it's a good platform to infuse your personality as a couple.
Another way you can make your invitations unique is by customizing the size. Who says they have to be boring rectangles? Opt for squares, circles, and other shapes to make your invites stand out.
Creativity
Embellishing an invitation is becoming common these days. Flowers, gems, sparkle, ribbon, etc. A few little embellishments can make a world of different in creating gorgeous invitations. Even the DIY kits you can purchase and make out of your home often come with embellishments to spice up your invites.
Color is something you can be creative with in wedding invitations. Gone are the days where white and ivory are the standard color options. Bolder colors are becoming more popular, and some couples choose invitations to reflect the color scheme they plan to incorporate into their wedding.
The use of photographs is another huge trend. A lot of couples even use photo strips (you know, like the photo booths you take pictures in at an amusement park?). They make fabulous save the date cards, and can also be used in other ways. Pictures enable you to be creative and personalize invitations. Also, who doesn't like to look at photos? Your guests will most likely appreciate seeing a few good shots of you and your fiancée.
The bottom line is that you don't have to feel pressure to send out boring invitations that don't fit your style. You have options. I wouldn't go super crazy with the uniqueness, as there are still a lot of people who have some sense of traditional etiquette, but it isn't the way it used to be.
